NCAER’s Investor Education and Protection Fund (IEPF) chair unit celebrates its first anniversary

NCAER’s Investor Education and Protection Fund (IEPF) chair unit completes its first year today, August 6, 2021. It marks a one-year long journey of the unit’s work in promoting investor awareness and protection of investor interests.

Investor Education and Protection Fund Authority (IEPFA) was established as a statutory authority by the Government of India in September, 2016. The Authority inter-alia administers the fund for the education and protection of the investors. IEPFA established this chair at NCAER in August,2020. Under the guidance of the IEPF Chair Professor Dr KP Krishnan, the IEPF unit focuses on conducting research on contemporary issues related to investor education & protection, analysing & reviewing the underlying economic, legal, and regulatory foundations. Additionally, the research unit aims to develop knowledge products, case studies, research articles and organizing workshops, conferences, seminars on issues related to investor education & protection.
The Unit completed its entire first year through the pandemic period. Hence most of its activities have been virtual in keeping with the government instructions. Starting December 2020, the unit conducted a series of five workshops on Investor Education and Protection . The workshop series was inaugurated on December 16, 2020 with a keynote address by RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das. This series of five NCAER workshops, held virtually, covered investor education issues in securities market, insurance, pension funds payment systems and credit markets. These workshops with key regulators, academics, researchers and consumer activists were an opportunity for participants to both learn from key regulators about their strategies for investor education and to contribute to refining the priorities for action and for carrying out relevant further research and enriching the knowledge base in this area.

Led by Dr K P Krishnan, IEPF Chair Professor, the  team members of the IEPF Unit at NCAER are Sudipto Banerjee, Amrita Pillai, both of who work as Consultants; Sundus Usmani is the Research Analyst while Abdul Wahid is the Research Coordinator.
