Shri Vivek Johri is an officer from the 1985 batch of Indian Revenue Service who retired as Chairman, Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) in July 2023.
In a career spanning 38 years, Shri Johri handled a variety of assignments in different functional verticals both in field formations as well as the Board but is known for the long years spent in formulation of tax policy. Having spent 17 years in the tax policy vertical of CBIC, he has been involved in preparing as many as 20 Union Budgets. The other highlights of his career include a stint in the Directorate General of Audit when the Audit program for Central Excise and Service Tax was revamped in collaboration with Revenue Canada; the successful conclusion of the WTO Trade Facilitation Agreement when he was posted as Minister (Customs) at India’s Permanent Mission to WTO; subsequent trade facilitation initiatives at Nhava Sheva Customs between 2017 and 2020. His tenure as Member and Chairman of the Board witnessed considerable improvement in administration of GST both from compliance and ease of doing business perspectives.
Shri Johri was conferred the Best Probationer Award in his batch and the Presidential Award for meritorious service in the year 2000.
He is currently with KPMG, India as a Senior Advisor on tax policy. He is also a Senior Advisor with the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), New Delhi whom he is assisting in setting up a Development Data lab.
His interests include reading philosophy, fiction, history and biography; painting and music.
