Investor Awareness Seminar: Investor Protection and Market Development: Advancing the Depth, Breadth and Inclusiveness of Capital Markets

1 August 2026, 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm IST Seminar In-person

Speaking at the seminar, the IEPF Chair Professor, Dr C. S. Mohapatra explained the importance of capital markets in connecting household savings with productive investment and highlighted the three dimensions of market development—depth, breadth, and inclusiveness. A deeper and broader capital market requires not only a wider range of financial instruments and participants but also strong regulation, transparency, and investor confidence. Further, small retail and first-time investors, SMEs, women, and Gen-Z investors should have access to financial education, opportunities and adequate protection for ensuring financial inclusiveness.

Depannita Ghosh, Senior Research Analyst, made a presentation on the three key dimensions of capital market development, viz., depth, breadth and inclusiveness. While depth refers to strengthening the market’s capacity to absorb a wider range of financial instruments, participants and orders, breadth entails bringing in more investors into the capital market; and inclusiveness presupposes access, protection, opportunities, and financial confidence for various categories of investors.
