Jagdish Bhagwati is University Professor (Economics, Law, and International Affairs) at Columbia University. He has been economic policy adviser the Director-General of GATT (1991-93), special adviser to the UN on globalization, and external adviser to the WTO. He has served on the expert group appointed by the director-general of the WTO on the future of the WTO and was a member of the Eminent Persons Group on the future of UNCTAD. Recently, he has been co-chair with President Halonen of Finland of the Eminent Persons Group on Developing Countries in the World Economy. He received his BA in Economics from Cambridge University and a Ph.D. in Economics from MIT.
Kaushik Basu is Professor of Economics and the C. Marks Professor of International Studies at Cornell University, and former Senior Vice President and Chief Economist of the World Bank (2012-16). From December 2009 to July 2012 he served as the Chief Economic Advisor (CEA) to the Government of India at the Ministry of Finance. Till 2009 he was Chairman of the Department of Economics and during 2006-9. He was Director of the Center for Analytic Economics at Cornell. Earlier he was Professor of Economics at the Delhi School of Economics, where in 1992 he founded the Centre for Development Economics in Delhi was its first Executive Director. He is also a founding member of the Madras School of Economics.
In May 2008 he was awarded one of India’s highest civilian awards, the Padma Bhushan, by the President of India. He has received several honorary degrees, including doctorates from IIT Bombay, Fordham University New York and Bath University, England.
Kemparaje Urs Subbaraje Urs is an Associate Fellow at NCAER, with more than 34 years of experience in applied economic research, socio-economic and industrial research. His core areas of research are large-scale surveys, particularly in developing the survey instrument, calculating the sample size, and identifying gaps in primary and secondary data. He has worked on both large-scale household and industrial surveys with NCAER. He has been associated with several projects including the study on Integrated Child Development Services, Rural Economic & Demographic Survey, non-conventional energy sources programme, Business Expectations Survey (BES) and Market Information Survey of Households (MISH).
Ajaya Kumar Sahu is Fellow at NCAER. He is an Agricultural Economist by training. During his stay at the NCAER, he has worked on areas like poverty analysis, issues related to agriculture and rural development, labour and employment with special reference to quality of jobs and skills, public finance and analysis of price dynamics. His expertise lies in handling large scale data like NSSO micro data on employment, consumption, enterprises, agriculture, ASI data, conducting primary survey that involves sampling and weight calculations. Presently he is working on Gig economy in India and the quarterly Business Expectations Survey. He completed his M. Phil in Economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, and is presently pursuing his Ph. D in Economics from Jamia Milia Islamia. He cleared the National Eligibility Test (NET) with the Junior Research Fellowship, conducted by the UGC.
Anil K Sharma is Secretary to the Governing Body and Operations Director. He has held several positions at NCAER after joining in 1992 including the Officiating Director General in May-June 2021. He has also been the NABARD Chair Professor at NCAER; Visiting Researcher at the International Trade Division, The World Bank, Washington D.C., USA; Consultant to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Paris; Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), Rome; and, Asian Development Bank (ADB), Manila; and, a Post-Doctoral Fellow at Research Institute for Agricultural Economics, Budapest, Hungary.
His main areas of research include – The WTO Agreement on Agriculture, Economic and Policy Reforms in Agriculture, Price Policy and Price Stabilization Mechanisms, Rural Credit, Rural Infrastructure and Rural Poverty. He advised the Ministry of Commerce and Industry on trade negotiations in agriculture under the WTO Agreement on Agriculture and has been a member of several government and industry committees and task forces. He received his MSc and PhD in Agricultural Economics from Himachal Pradesh Agricultural University.
